Pete has done it again....

Pete has done it again....

Pete Whittaker is my all time favorite climber for two solid reasons, and when I say “solid” I’m talking pink tricam levels of bomberness here.

In my eyes Pete seems to push levels and boundaries that the vast majority of people including some climbers don’t understand or give two shits about. I don't think it's fair seeing some of the stuff for he does, for him not be widely considered one of the greatest climbers of all time. My climbing man crush may be blinding me here, but I don't care.

When I heard he free rope soloed Freerider in a day all I could think was he must have seriously run out some of those pitches. I cant imagine having to stop mid 5.12d to feed out some slack of your silent partner, trying to manage all the faff on a seriously tough route is insane, imagine how much more endurance the enduro corner would take, I can’t even comprehend it… (partly because there is no way I could even ever climb 5.12d… fuck that… sounds hard). He free climbed, abbed, jugged and hauled the entire of ElCap in a freaking day!

In 2015 he climbed an E6 route in Antrim Fairhead, That’s around 5.13dX in freedom units right ? The route was initially graded E7/8 but was downgraded due to a hidden wire placement that can be found upon abseil inspection, a wire that Pete didn’t place, because he onsighted the route. He climbed “The complete scream” using skyhooks some duct tape and blu-tack.. I wouldn't even abseil that route… I remember seeing a picture of him holding onto a crimp in one hand, with his thumb on the other hand holding a hook to the wall, while also using that same (currently occupied) hand to pull out a roll of duct tape and tearing it with his teeth… is this even still climbing?! the guy is taping sky hooks not designed to hold falls to tiny edges while busting seriously hard moves.

but…The main reason Pete is my favorite climber is because, once, a few years ago, before I started @justbombergear, I got shitfaced and sent him a message asking him to come to Ireland for some climbing, and he actually messaged me back, saying he was sorry he couldn’t make it… I’d love to watch him do that route again, If he ever comes back, I’d love to see him Re-Pete it.
